K-2 Mathematics

Two young students in coats playing outside with hoolahoops. In Kindergarten, students will learn number names and count in sequence. Students will be able to count the number of objects. As they progress, they will understand addition as putting together and adding to. They will understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from. Students will analyze, compare, create, and compose shapes. The major math domains in Kindergarten are: Counting and Cardinality, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Measurement and Data, and Geometry.

In first grade, students will represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. They will add and subtract within 20. Students will work with addition and subtraction equations and understand the relationship between addition and subtraction. They will extend the counting sequence beyond 120 and understand place value. Students will use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. Students will also tell and write time as well as reason with shapes, their attributes, and fractions. The domains covered in first grade include Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Measurement and Data and Geometry.

In second grade, students will fluently add and subtract within 20. They will also use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. Students will represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. They will measure, compare and estimate lengths in standard units. Students will represent and interpret data. Students will reason with shapes and their attributes. The domains covered in second grade include Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Measurement and Data, and Geometry.
