Middle School English

Young student reading at a desk in a classroom. We follow the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project across grades K-8. The units of study are designed to take a class through a shared study of particular genres of reading and writing, tying together the content areas to build the foundations of literacy. Students’ grow as readers and writers through the workshop model. This includes the analyses of authentic and diverse mentor texts, self-reflections through rich peer-driven collaboration, and targeted feedback from both teachers and peers. We use learning progressions to observe and assess students’ writing, to develop students’ use of self-monitoring strategies, and set them on trajectories of growth.
