Over the course of 3 years, students will engage in communicative activities and projects to develop their Spanish language proficiency across the four modalities: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students will become active members of the World Language classroom, learning to communicate in a new language in a variety of ways, including interpretative, interpersonal, and presentational communication, consistent with the NYS Learning Standards for World Languages. Students will also learn about Hispanic cultures across various Spanish-speaking countries and regions, developing their cultural awareness and competence alongside their language skills.
6th grade serves as an introductory course to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures. Topics include greetings, introductions, the weather, physical description & personality, school life, family, and food. The primary goal is to foster passion and excitement for learning a new language and understanding diverse cultures while developing basic proficiency and communicative skills.
Our 7th grade students continue to develop their proficiency in Spanish. While a communicative approach is still predominantly taken in the classroom, there is also an increased focus on the technical aspects of the language, such as grammar, in order to ensure accuracy when communicating. Topics include around the house, in the city, travel, medical attention, and daily routines. The primary goal is for students to feel comfortable enough to utilize their language skills in real-world situations.
