Community Forum: Bell-to-Bell Ban on Internet-Enabled Devices

Posted Date: 5/28/25 (4:14 PM)

Dear GUFS Families,

We invite all parents and guardians to join us for a Community Forum during the upcoming Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at 7 PM, to discuss the recently adopted New York State law mandating a Bell-to-Bell Ban on Internet-Enabled Devices in Schools.

This new law, which takes effect in the 2025–2026 school year, prohibits the use of smartphones and other internet-enabled personal devices by students throughout the entire school day, from the first bell to the last, including during lunch, recess, and passing times. While schools are granted some flexibility in implementing this policy, each district is required to develop a local plan in consultation with parents, students, and staff.

At this forum, we will:

  • Provide an overview of the new law and its implications

  • Share initial thoughts on implementation strategies

  • Gather input and feedback from our parents and guardians

We recognize that this legislation may raise questions and concerns for families, educators, and students alike. This forum is an opportunity to learn more about the law, share perspectives, and help inform how our district responds.

We encourage your participation in this critical conversation.

Sincerely,

Dr. Greg Stowell

Superintendent of Schools
